Items That Require Backflow Protection

Backflow protection is essential for preventing contaminated water from flowing back into the clean water supply. Here are some common items and systems that typically require backflow protection:

  1. Irrigation Systems: Sprinkler systems can introduce fertilizers, pesticides, or other contaminants into the water supply without proper backflow prevention.

  2. Hose Bibs: Outdoor faucets connected to hoses can create cross-connections, especially if submerged in contaminated water.

  3. Swimming Pools and Spas: Chemicals used in pools and spas can backflow into the water supply.

  4. Fire Suppression Systems: These systems often use non-potable water, which requires backflow prevention to protect the potable water supply.

  5. Commercial Appliances: Large-scale appliances, such as those used in restaurants or industrial settings, may require backflow prevention.

  6. Boilers and Heating Systems: These systems can create pressure imbalances that lead to backflow.
